Dr Daniel Baum

Having started my life in Hong Kong, I moved to Australia in 2005 with my Dad and two brothers to attend The Southport School on the Gold Coast. On the Gold Coast we led active lives participating in all extra-curricular activities humanly possible.  Following school, I made the move to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor of Science at UQ, residing at Cromwell College. Whilst I UQ I became an active member of the University of Queensland Rugby Football Club. During this time I took 6 months away from university to take up an opportunity to play rugby and work in the South of France, where I had my first taste of country life. I worked for the local vineyard and played rugby, so I the good fortune of being at the epicentre of the two most valued things in the town.  Following my undergraduate studies on my pursuit of a career as a Doctor, I spent time in Vanuatu, Fiji, and Nepal, in communities where I continued to develop my understanding around access to services and resource limitations, a common feature of many rural communities. This then prompted my next course of study – Master of International Public Health at the UNSW, which had a focus on healthcare in under resourced settings, prior to commencing medical school at the University of Notre Dame Sydney.  While in medical school I completed clinical rotations in the Hawkesbury region at the base of the Blue Mountains, at in Ballarat, Victoria. I have subsequently continued my work in Victoria, working in Ballarat and Ararat (a rural town by Victorian standards!), and now on a pathway to becoming a Rural Generalist, with the intention of developing skills in GP, Emergency, and Obstetrics. I am looking forward to the next phase of my journey in Theodore and all that I will be able to learn from my new teachers and community.

Other bits about me – I have kept bees and chickens, spent 12 days at sea sailing from Auckland to Tahiti, and have been involved in the rescue of a sinking vessel under the glow of an active volcano in Vanuatu. I enjoy creating things and have developed woodwork and photography as a bit of a hobby (tips for photo spots please!). I love sport, and I am an average (at best) golfer. I speak passable French, so if you do too and want to practice, I am always keen. I am excited to return to Queensland, to get to know the people of Theodore, and become part of your community.
