Practice Services

Theodore Medical is able to offer consultations needed to meet your health issues. From short consultations that may only require an uncomplicated visit to prolonged consultations for more complex health matters, our appointment system can cater. Theodore Medical has invested in medical equipment which means there are many tests and procedures that can be done at the surgery instead of having to travel away. Equipment includes:
  • X-ray facilities
  • On-Site Dispensary limited to non PBS medications for after hours/emergencies and convenience
  • ECG – Electrocardiograph or heart tracing
  • Spirometry – lung function testing
  • Cryotherapy – freezing sunspots
  • Slit Lamp – removal of foreign bodies from eye and inner eye health
  • Operating microscope for ear suctions
  • Ultrasound
  • ABI – Ankle-Brachial Index –
  • Glucometer
  • INR
  • Ear Irrigation
  • Hearing Testing
  • Visual Acuity
  • Removal of lesions

Extra Rural Medicine Training

To utilise these facilities, the doctors of Theodore Medical Centre have undertaken training in additional rural medical skills, including:
  • Acupuncture
  • Anaesthetics
  • Manual therapy (Back manipulation)
  • Radiography/Radiology/Ultrasound
  • Surgery
  • Antenatal and obstetrics

Diagnostic Imaging

X-rays

  • Doctors will suggest an X-ray if needed to assist in diagnosis and to plan treatment
  • Doctors will explain the reason behind decision to have an X-ray and explain such things as radiation
  • If female, you will be asked if you might be pregnant as extra precautions are taken if pregnant
  • You will be asked for consent unless it is an emergency
  • Nurses with X-ray licences will position you and take the X-ray as per the doctor’s orders/instructions
  • Results are immediate and the doctors will discuss the findings wit you once you are back in the consulting room
  • X-rays are charged at the Medicare rate, so there is no out of pocket expense in having an X-ray
  • Sometimes an X-ray is transmitted to I-Med in Rockhampton for a second opinion. There is no charge to the patient for this second reading opinion.
  • Any further results will be discussed at a later time.

Ultrasound

  • Doctors will suggest an ultrasound if it is considered necessary to diagnose a potential health concern or to confirm a pregnancy and dates.
  • Doctors will explain the reason behind the decision to have an ultrasound and you will be asked for your verbal consent to proceed.
  • A fullish bladder is sometimes needed for a good result
  • You can change you mind at any time if you don’t want the scan
  • Doctors will perform the ultrasound
  • A gel is used on the skin to ensure the probes slides over the skin to give a clear scan. This is easily wiped off after the scan
  • All probes are disinfected according to accreditation standards after every use.
  • Ultrasounds are charged at the Medicare fee so there is no out of pocket expenses.
  • Results are immediate and doctors will discuss results with you then and there.

Pathology or Test Results

  • Pathology services are offered in the practice for the convenience of Theodore Medical Centre patients.
  • Pathology requests from outside GPs and Specialists will need to be arranged during a consultation with one of our doctors.
  • Pathology tests are sent to Sullivan & Nicolaides Pathology in Rockhampton or to Brisbane.

Listed are a few handy tips about pathology results.

  • The Practice Nurses will contact you as soon as possible if there is anything the doctors need to report to you
  • Some results may mean an appointment to come back to doctor is required
  • Such appointments mean a significant result. This appointment is important to your health and should be kept.
  • Ensure the surgery always has your up to date contact details – phone or mobile phone number- so you can be reached and please ensure that this it the one you want them to reach you on
  • Receptionists are not able to give out results
  • If you don’t hear from our practice nurse then the results are within normal limits. However, if you would like to contact us re your results, please ring after 10.30am and before 1.00pm
  • If detailed information is required about a result please make an appointment to discuss with doctor who is best trained to answer all your questions and concerns
